Illustrations of characters for Destroying Angel

Destroying Angel (amanita ocreata) is the main character and hero of the story. An amnesiatic fungus who was beaten and left for dead by the local scum of the mushroom realm, he is discovered and rescued by the most unlikely of creatures and emerges back into the world as one of the most dangerous mushrooms alive. Searching for who he is and for his purpose in life, he is befriended by an eccentric and radical group of characters who will each lend a hand in his search and ultimately help Destroying Angel to save himself and the world...Destroying Angel has a natural ability to search out evil, and as he learns who he is, and what his connections are to each of his allies, he will face his deepest fears, and attempt to overcome a most heinous enemy. An enemy who he will never defeat alone...
Ero Ilisili (unknown species) is a small mushroom from the once mighty Kuroi-Houshi Clan (black spore clan). For as far back as any woodland creatures can recall, any time or place the Kuroi-Houshi show up, death and suffering follows. They are a ruthless and heartless parasitic fungus who suck dry all resources and infect the minds of those they invade, taking the strong and converting them to mindless slaves who will follow and aid them in their endless path of destruction. Where our story begins, Ero has just witnessed his entire clan wiped out by a lone mushroom assassin...who spares only him...but why?

Cysto Modio (cystoderma fallax) is the last remaining member of a royal species who was systematically eradicated by overzealous pickers who wiped out patches and clear cut their environments...Cysto has survived by strength, will and wit alone. He roams the mushroom realm searching for a place where he might one day replenish his royal line, and along the way, he meets Destroying Angel and helps him to discover answers which lead to some surprising discoveries about himself...

Midori Marasmius (mirasmius rotula) is the daughter of a master who founded the Leaping Lotus School. She has led a hard life, having lost everyone from her mother, her father, her lover and when discovered by Destroying Angel, Cysto Modio and another, she has just witnessed her whole village pillaged. A community of students and thinkers, they all heard of a coming war and evacuated. Midori, her father and her personal guard were all that were left, and her father did not survive the onslaught. Now, faced with rebuilding her village and school from the ground up, she opts to join Destroying Angel and his company to search out and inflict revenge on her father's assassins. And in her heart, she hopes that maybe along the way, she will hear tell of whatever happened to her long lost love who went out to bring the teachings of the world to others, and was never heard from again....
Nogero Elente (stropharia aeruginosa) is a true warrior. He lives deep within the woods, over an old action figure graveyard. He has had to replace multiple limbs with "bionic" or plastic parts. A mushroom of few words and strong resolve, he is an ally that this company could not afford to lose. If they can convince him to join them in their journey, they may hold the only true advantage that either side could possibly have...  plastic weapons and armor...and the knowledge to use them.

Gobo Oborem (Boletus appendiculatus) appears to Destroying Angel shortly after he sets out to discover who he is... he is just a small button, but exhibits natural skill and an ability to learn very quickly, so - lonely as he is, Destroying Angel takes the little guy under his wing. Within just the first few days of their journey, Gobo has doubled in size, and when confronted by evil henchmen, he has his pileus (cap) knocked off, which he replaces thoughout the story with various objects... Gobo also suffers from a speech impediment and at first guess would be assumed to be "simple"...but there is more to this big bolete than anyone is aware of...

Od Del (Psilocybe Azurescens) is a kooky little mushroom who has a knack for irritating certain characters and rambles on and on about well, nothing. He carries no weapon, for he has no need for one. His "mycelial consciousness" is so wide-spread that he is aware of most things minutes before they occur. He uses this ability to forewarn others, though the rarely heed his warnings due to the fact that he speaks in such random puzzling language and goes off on so many tangents...it is just plain hard to decipher what it is he means, by anything...sometimes until it is too late. Od Del does offer one useful benefit to the group, his ability to confuse the enemy. Od Del traveled the mushroom realm alone for years, just wandering here and there...until one day, he met a mushroom who had given up on himself... which is one thing Od Del can't bear to see....
Od Dolore (Psilocybe cyanofibrilosa) is a quiet, serious, reserved mushroom. Much the opposite of Od Del, which may be why they have been inseparable since the time they met. Od Dolore can't recall where he came from... he knows he set out with a purpose, but somewhere along the way, he lost his mind, he lost his only friend, and he lost his way... He searches now with Od Del for his lost friend known only as Bo. While Od Del searches for his friends roots and seeks out the answers that will return him home, where he will find himself and, whatever it was he left behind. Od Dolore also has a knack to attract insects who can be of assistance to the company. He has befriended a displaced Peruvian Dung Bettle named Ebisu, who is gifted with finding the very habitat that Od Del and Od Dolore just adore! DUNG!
Ebisu (scarabaeine unknown) is a small and protective dung beetle who has befriended Od Del and Od Dolore. He acts as a scout, watchman, protector and navigator. This trio normally travels at night, as Ebisu navigates using Lunar Polarity. He is well versed in battle tactics as well, and is an unrelenting opponent.

Cobalt Soot (Chilocorus stigma) is the personal bodyguard of Midori Marasmius. He is a veteran of defense having served Odit Miniatu, of the Amanita Army to the North for quite a while. He retired, but found his life lacked the excitement he once enjoyed, and so took a job for the Leaping Lotus School, as an instructor in the  Teachings of the Art of Self Defense, where he met Midori and her father, who secretly hired Cobalt to be his daughters' protector, knowing that her life would soon be endangered and that she was too proud to admit she may need help. Cobalt is at once the best friend and worst enemy you could ever imagine.

Ervilius 8 (Unknown species and clones) is the evil fungal overlord who is reeking havoc on the whole of the mushroom realm. He is though to be amassing an army that will dwarf that of Odit Miniatus' Amanita Army, which serves as the reigning force keeping the peace in the mushroom realm. Ervilius was once a scholar, who's quest for knowledge became an insane obsession and eventually drove him mad. He then attempted to clone himself with the thought of gaining knowledge through his clones, and then re-absorbing it back, however his clones did not turn out exactly as he had planned...and now is not sure if they are a welcome addition to his army, or a nuisance. Either way, Ervilius has control of the largest army, and worst bunch of thug shrooms that has ever existed. And he wants more... always more.

Macchu Acchu (xerula furfuracea) is a bounty hunting scum of the earth mushroom hired by Ervilius for only one purpose... to find his enemies, and kill them. He is good at his job. Macchu wears armor fashioned from insects and creatures which he has conquered over time. Beetles, Slugs, Squirrel, Birds... he is fearless and very feared. Macchu has the reputation of being an instigator in many instances where mushrooms lost their lives... and he is proud of that reputation. He loves violence, even if he is not the one acting on it. He is known to work closely with the only other mushroom feared more than Ervilius...

Biru Chui (Stropharia Ambigua) has a reputation as well. He is a villain who is known throughout the mushroom realm as the only shroom ever to kill a Kuroi-Houshi. He had no witnesses, and no proof (the Kuroi-Houshi never leave one of their own behind). But when you make a claim to have killed not one, but four of them...there is not a fungus in the area who will question you, for the simple fact that if you indeed did kill them, why would you hesitate to kill a fungus questioning you. This is probably the best approach to take with Biru. He has a short fuse, a raging temper, and can make nearly anything into a weapon. Biru has an arch nemesis... Nogero Elente is his master as well as the one mushroom Biru might not jump right into a fight with...then again, he just might.

Chocho Rubra (Aseroe Rubra) is a cowardly, scheisty and cold-hearted tropical transplant who escaped from an atrium somewhere inland, and fled to the coastal area in an attempt to find a way back to Hawaii. What he found instead was an opportunity to benefit from the pain and suffering of others in the service of Ervilius. Chocho claims to have possession of magic, although he has time and again failed to produce any proof of this. He does exhibit one major ability in the face of danger... he stinks... really, really bad! And that alone can be the distraction he needs to turn and run!

Sluggos (Deroceras laeve, Arion lusitanicus, Limax cinereoniger) are the most feared enemy of any mushroom... however, recently Ervilius has discovered some way to "control" them to do his bidding and transport his minions. Slugs can have up to 26,000 teeth, and if you were a mushroom, staring down that throat, stuck in a puddle of extremely sticky slime, unable to move, and just awaiting your own slowly approaching death... which would occure one painful bit after another... you would fear them also.

 ...more characters to come...

Rooms without Walls...

The Destroying Angel, amanita virosa, is among the most toxic of fungus. This brilliant white mushroom was the initial idea behind "Destroying Angel".

Originally, the plot was to be poisonous mushrooms against edible/medicinal mushrooms...the problem was that there were only a hand full of really toxic mushrooms, and the number of edible and medicinal shrooms far outnumbered them, then there were non-edible, but non-toxic mushrooms to account for...
I quickly changed the characters in the story to be based on the actual characteristics and environments of the i
ndividual species they were based on.

And so, Destroying Angel became the main hero character, rather than a villain.
Chantrelle, Boletus, Matsutake, and other well known mushrooms had soon changed sides, and insects and slugs were introduced as characters playing major roles in the relationships mushrooms have with one another, and their environments...

Following this change to the story, I found
myself suddenly immersed in mushroom research...for the next two years!

Days were spent hunting and photographing mushrooms and their surroundings on a Macro level. Nights consisted of researching the comparisons and differences and where and why and HOW these amazing organizms live and thrive.
By 2009, I had written a story in Ten Volumes, and created eight Hero characters, and as many villainous fungi...along with insect and various other forest creatures who play a part in this world beneath our feet, and are involved in lies, deceipt, war and love...the concept was far from what I had envisioned initially...

Rogue again...

The Destroying Angel began in the conceptual stages in 2006. Originally, it was going to be a comic book, which had evolved to the "graphic novel"...and so I decided, rather than more cells, and less words, I would create it instead with full page illustrations, and more descriptive writing (i hope)...

During 2007, we moved to Cannon Beach, i shelved the project for the most part while doing field research along the coast. I discovered much more about Fungi than I had ever even imagined, and that was just scraping the surface....

My research and field study continued in 2008 and 2009. It was from late 2007 through mid 2008 that the main characters, villains scenery were re-created, edited and finalized. By the end of 2008, I had eight main heroes, and at least four sidekicks, as well as 15 villains and numerous other threats for our band of samurai shrooms to battle and defend against...in the realm of fungi...

In mid 2009, I returned to the Rogue Valley (home) with my family. With a firm foundation on which to build this story, I began collecting action figures to use as prototypes for the Destroying Angel line...by applying a paper clay to the extremities, and heads/or removing them, I will remold, and detail/paint/color/clothe each character. The difference in scale is going to be a main factor, as some characters are very small, while others are very large in comparison.

technology is advancing beyond even our own grasp...yet we hold on...

I have been busy moving, working, drawing, all the same stuff...still no where to do what I do, but I do it nonetheless....and all of that is about to CHANGE!!!

Our new place in Ashland has a storage shed that amazingly is not cluttered with other peoples belongings! A little drywall and a rug, and I will finally have a place to write, illustrate and complete Destroying Angel...and a place to create the prototype action figures as well! I am really looking forward to proceeding with my story of Samurai Mushrooms...

Od Dolore, Cobalt Soot, Od Del, Ebisu, Cysto Modio, Gobo Oborem, Nogero Elente, Ero ilisili, Destroying Angel, Ervilius <8>, Chocho Rubra.

I am beginning a new spread for FUNGI magazine (www.fungimag.com) - showcasing all of the most popular forays and events around North America! And this summer, I plan to set out to capture my own photos of Psathyrella Aquatic, the worlds only known Underwater Gilled Mushroom! (No, not gills like a fish)...

Mushroomers (mycophiles) are coming outta the woodwork now...i meet people every other day with a connection to, or who are aware of someone with a connection to....Mushrooms. And here comes Alice in Wonderland to re-confirm all of the misconceptions of these wonderful organisms. It had better be good!

stay tuned for more on...
